NPR social experiment

Today for my NPR news. I looked at the Twitter account, Instagram and Facebook account. All three were very informational. I looked at each account for a an hour on and off to see what they posted. For the Twitter account they posted a lot and it’s 1:00 right now. They have a couple of stories up posted and retweeted. One of the stories they talked about were NPR’s paid internship. On the NPR Instagram they have a picture of a man talking bout concussion and kids but how adults are more vulnerable to traumatic brain injury. Finally on the NPR’s Facebook page they did a lot of stories but one that stuck out today was about Idaho’s conservative Legislature approved the use of cannabis oil for epilepsy treatment, but the governor isn’t on board. Even though the stories were different on each site they all had significant news stories to tell. In the end they all had valuable information that was vital for the public to see.

Mass communication day 2k15

Mass communication day 2015 went better than I initially thought it would go. Although there weren’t many students there it was a nice amount of previous alumni who was there to share their knowledge and stories. Mass communication day is important for us to have as students because it allows us to get an understanding of what expected of us. From the various things that where said during mass communication day from the different panels the one thing that stuck with me the most was about social media. Social media is rapidly evolving not only in our field as communication majors but the real world as well. You have to be careful as to what you put on social media because once you put something online its on there forever. If you’re not on social media or do not know how to operate it, it’s best you learn as soon as possible because no a days news ,information, and customers are all on social media now. For example we had to use an called meerkat which is a livestream app that allows you to stream video live and put it on Twitter. Essentially if you own a company or even work for one at some point and time if they don’t interact with social media they will be lost for good. Another thing I took away from mass communication day was to do something you love because in this feel you can be your own boss and if you aren’t doing something you love to do, you won’t be make much money because your not applying yourself. To wrap up mass communication day graduating seniors were acknowledged for they’re hard work throughout the years as well as up and coming underclass men like myself I received too awards one from TigerTv and another from WJSU. It was an honor for me to be recognized for my accomplishments. At the end of the day the most important thing is to do what makes you happy.

Louisville Slugger ?

The story of the University of Louisville Guard Chris Jones was reported on ESPN as well as it’s website and also on the Courier-Journal. I will compare and contrast how the same story was told from the television, newspaper, and the internet.

On ESPN website the story of University of Louisville Guard Chris Jones  was told through video along with a short paragraph explaining what transpired. In the Courier-Journal it was told through print style of writing. Last but not least the story was covered on ESPN TV it was told through video of him playing and a list of his suspension.

The way a news story is told on television is different from the way it is told online because online you read the story yourself; Whereas on television the story is told to you through videos and pictures rather than through words. The way the story is told through newspaper is different than it being told online because it is style of writing is different.

University of Louisville Guard Chris Jones a senior from Memphis,Tennessee  was averaging 13.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists a game before he was dismissed from the team by head Coach Rick Pitino. Jones was first suspended on Feb. 17 for sending a threatening text to his a former girlfriend. On the night of Louisville win over University of Miami’s basketball team, Jones was accused of raping one woman and sodomizing another. There were two others who are being charged in the alleged attack on the second woman.  Jalen D. Tilford is charged with rape and sodomy, and Tyvon Julah Walker is charged with rape. They were arrested, and the judge set a bond of $75,000 for Tilford and $100,000 for Walker.Head coach Rick Pitino said “I’m totally saddened to the point of disbelief.”

This story was newsworthy because you had a star athlete for a University accused of sending threatening messages to an ex girlfriend one week then accused of raping and sodomizing two women the next week. ESPN reported that Chris Jones had been dismissed from the University as well as the team a day after he helped the team defeat a University of Miami team. The story was timely because he had just been suspended for the previous game in which the team lost to the University of Syracuse only to be reinstated just to be kicked off again. This significance of this story is that he got a slap on the wrist the first time and didn’t receive help and then when he subsequently got in trouble the next week he was axed. The story was presented through video, text and photos. Video was the most effective way because it told the story through all aspects it showed pictures it gave audio clips and videos. Some of the information that was included in the printed version was information from Jones attorney. Jones attorney Scott Cox said ” we believe that Chris is innocent and has been falsely accused, and that he believed that his client was going to be found not guilty.” Cox also said that there’s video potentially in the hallway of the building where the alleged attacks occurred, and also video of the parking lot.” Cox later said that he felt the video would be exculpatory for Chris Jones. That tidbit of information of Jones attorney talking about his client was not part of the broadcast story. The broadcast story told more of the sports side of the story saying how much this team depended on him and how his recent troubles cost the team more than he or anyone might’ve thought. The difference between the two was they both told the same story it was just that it was told in a different view.

Above is a picture from The Courier-Journal of former UofL basketball player Chris Jones waiting for the judge to charge him with raping one woman and sodomizing of another. Jones pleaded not guilty. In the hearing the Judge Shelia Collins ordered Jones to have no contact with either woman. Judge Collins told Jones that if he” violated her ruling she would personally send the police after him.” The Former UofL Guard was released on house arrest in lieu of a $25,000 bond.

NBC Brian Williams Fabricated Fame

NBC reporter Brian Williams fabricated story perhaps led him to be the famous journalists is today. Williams was the same reporter who went after CBS when they were covering a story on former President Bush. Williams deliberately went against the journalist code of ethics when he told the world he was in a helicopter attacked by an RPG missile in Iraq. It’s unethical for journalists to lie to sell a story because it ruins their credibility. As a result of finding out his fabricated story many people have begun to question the journalist work. Although he has been suspended for six months I do not believe that he will ever truly recover from this because of the magnitude of the lie and the fact that he waited until he was caught in a lie to confess. Which makes you wonder how many other journalists have lied to get a story to sell or to raise ratings? What Brian Williams not only affected his credibility but the news’s credibility as a whole people are already skeptical on watching the news because of that very reason, lying. The real elephant in the room is how would America  have reacted if Brian Williams was black ?

Tweet Week 2k15

Tweet week was a great experience for me to follow more journalist in the field of work I want to be a part of. Before tweet week I was on twitter but I was not on it all the time balancing school and football I just lost the time to actually tweet as much as I use too. Perhaps the hardest thing about this assignment was having to tweet 3 times a day for a week straight because even though I’m on twitter everyday I don’t necessarily tweet every time I’m on. Also by me following other journalist it allows me to be able to keep up on recent news. Before tweet week I would probably tweet once or twice a week depending on how I felt and if what ever came to my head was worth tweeting. To me I think twitter is better than Facebook when it comes to expressing your mind because with twitter it challenges you to get what’s ever on your mind across in 140 characters, which is something hard to do especially if you have a lot on your mind or its a topic you really want to express. If it wasn’t for tweet week I probably wouldn’t have followed the journalist or news accounts I did because I didn’t see the need too, but if I want to be successful in this field I know I have to be technology savvy which includes being up to date with the latest social media news. All in all tweet week is a great way for someone who is not social media friendly or involved a stepping stone into the future.
